Dr. Feroz Akhtar is a medical professional specializing in anesthesiology with a career-long interest in clinical research and predictive modeling. His perspective on safety changed forever in 2015, when the Nepal earthquake shook his century-old family home.

“There are moments in our lives that define us,” he says. “For my family, it was seeing our car and house tremble and realizing that we were only praying for safety, not prepared for it”.

Leveraging his background in high-stakes medical environments and his passion for precision, Dr. Akhtar founded The Indian Prepper to provide fellow Indians with vetted information, curated gear, and resilient infrastructure designs tailored for the local scenario.

Prayer is Not a Plan: Why I Became the Indian Prepper

In 2015, the Nepal earthquake didn’t just shake the ground; it shook the foundation of how I viewed safety. Being close to the epicenter, I watched our century-old family home tremble. In those seconds of jolts and swaying walls, all we could do was pray.

But as the dust settled, a hard realization hit me: Prayer is not a plan.

We needed a systematic way to protect our families against the specific risks of our region—from seismic activity to the annual monsoon floods and urban grid failures. My professional life is built on preparation and crisis management, yet at home, I was reactive instead of proactive.

In India, we often treat disasters as “acts of God” that we simply have to endure. But a new wave of urban preparedness is rising. We are seeing a community of people who refuse to be caught off guard by the next flood or power failure.

The Indian Prepper is my contribution to this movement. Over the coming days, I’ll be sharing blog posts that translate global preparedness standards into the unique Indian scenario.

It’s time to move beyond “hoping for the best” and start planning for it.
